Why Damascus?

Today, we have a wide selection of modern, powerful knife steels available to us. For any application, the appropriate steel can be chosen – forging Damascus is no longer a necessity.

Yet, Damascus possesses a special charm. The lively grain, which is created from fire and handwork, gives every blade character and soul. What was once a pure necessity is today an expression of craftsmanship and aesthetics – a piece of tradition that still fascinates to this day.

The exact origin of Damascus knives is not clearly defined, as this type of knife has been produced for centuries in various cultures. The term “Damast” often refers to a special forging technique and not to a specific place of origin. Historically, the production of Damascus steel is often associated with the Middle East, especially ancient Persia. However, the technique was also used in other regions such as India, China and Japan.

The production of Damascus steel involves the laborious forging of layers of different steels with various alloys and properties, which are then fire-welded and folded together. This process results in a material with unique patterns and improved properties such as hardness and flexibility.

The characteristic pattern of Damascus is only visible when the finished, sharpened blade is treated with acid, a process known as etching. The different metal layers with their different compositions behave differently when exposed to acid. The addition of nickel, for example, makes a steel more resistant and makes it appear very bright, while manganese makes the steel appear darker.

The production of Damascus steel is a time-consuming process that requires skill and experience. The steel is created through repeated folding, forging, and hammering. The more complex the pattern, the longer the forging process takes. To produce a high-end knife, a variety of machines and equipment are needed, which, of course, also require maintenance and repair due to their exposure to extreme stresses.

High-quality Damascus knives are made from high-quality steel and first-class materials. The selection and use of high-quality materials not only influence the performance of the knife but also its price. Due to the high hardness of the steels, expensive ceramic or diamond-coated abrasives are required.

Finally, the amount of labor is a major factor in the price. Countless hours of handwork go into each individual knife.

It is important to note that most color changes are purely aesthetic and generally do not affect the performance of the knife. Always clean your Damascus knife with soft materials, similar to a lacquered surface – the gentler, the better.

A knife should never be left with cutting food; almost every fruit and vegetable contains acids that, with prolonged exposure, can have an optical effect on the steel. Therefore, always rinse it by hand under lukewarm water and dry it thoroughly after use.

With non-stainless Damascus knives, a natural patina forms over time. This is the normal protective mechanism of the steel to protect against further corrosion.

Your knife can of course be reworked and brought back to its original condition at any time. Simply contact your trusted blacksmith.

Stainless steel:

The first and for most people most important point with stainless knives is the corrosion resistance, which can only be achieved through a very high chromium content in the steel. Unfortunately, this high chromium content also brings some disadvantages with it.

Advantages of stainless steel:

  • Corrosion resistant

  • The “Damast color” is very durable

Disadvantages of stainless steel:

  • Difficult to sharpen yourself

  • Faster to lose sharpness

  • The maximum attainable sharpness is reduced

  • Coarser steel microstructure

  • The Damascus steel pattern is less pronounced.

  • Damascus steel is significantly more expensive due to its material.

  • The production of Damascus is considerably more complex.

  • It is not possible to embellish with colored metals, such as copper.

  • It is more difficult to process, harden, and sharpen, etc.

Stainless steel is indispensable in many areas. The choice of steel must always be adapted to the intended application.

Non-stainless steel:

The almost only disadvantage of these knives is the lower corrosion resistance, which is crucial for many buyers. If you leave your knife with food residue for 1-2 days in a pizza box because you forgot about it, this is not a problem for stainless steel, but with non-stainless steel, you will lose optical beauty as a result.

Advantages of non-stainless steel:

  • Easier to sharpen yourself

  • Best edge retention

  • Extreme maximum sharpness

  • Finer steel grain structure

  • Extremely high contrast

  • Compatible with various non-ferrous metals

  • Steel price is significantly lower

  • Easier to work with

Disadvantages of non-stainless steel:

  • Less corrosion-resistant

  • Develops a patina

  • “Damascus color” is less durable

As you can see, the advantages of these knives clearly outweigh the disadvantages. So, if you want a kitchen knife with maximum performance and beauty, the choice should be non-stainless steel. Many chefs even consider the patina to be beautiful. This natural oxidation develops through regular use and interaction with various foods, reflecting your own personal touch.

The terms “Chinese Damascus” or “Pakistani Damascus” generally refer to Damascus-patterned products made in China or Pakistan. It’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily indicate the quality of the Damascus steel itself, but rather the place of manufacture.

Both regions produce fantastic knives. Unfortunately, the internet is flooded with low-quality Damascus knives, primarily from these regions. Whether on eBay, Amazon, Etsy, AliExpress, Temu, or other platforms, you’ll find them everywhere—and at ridiculously low prices. The steel used is usually of very poor quality, sometimes even unusable.

In my experience, “Chinese Damascus” is typically always stainless steel with a single cutting layer, while “Pakistani Damascus” is usually non-stainless and often twisted.

Sharpening

How to Sharpen Your Knives on a WhetstoneWie schärfe ich meine Messer am Wasserstein?

Sharpening knives on a whetstone is an art that requires practice, patience, and attention to detail. It’s a meticulous process where the right technique and care are crucial. Developing a feel for the sharpening process takes time, so don’t expect to master it overnight.

To sharpen the knife correctly, you must apply the right angle and the right pressure to the stone. It is important to soak the whetstone in water for about 10 minutes before use and to regularly moisten it to achieve an optimal sharpening result.

This type of sharpening is not something you learn overnight and is therefore not suitable for everyone. If you simply want sharp knives, this sharpening technique is unfortunately not recommended for you.

Sonstiges

A cutting board is not just any cutting board! It is crucial for maintaining the sharpness of your knife.

Plastic and metal cutting boards are generally not recommended. When cutting, small particles are always worn away, which, in these two cases, are not exactly health-promoting or suitable for consumption.

With woods that are too soft, such as those from various coniferous trees, the blade— as already mentioned—can easily get stuck briefly. Another disadvantage is that soft wood is more absorbent; food residues can penetrate, making it very difficult to clean and more susceptible to bacteria.

Wood that is too hard, such as bamboo, will dull your blade much more quickly.

Domestic hardwoods like oak, beech, and walnut offer excellent hardness, are easy to clean, and have a great appearance. The size of your cutting board depends entirely on your cutting habits.

No matter which wood you choose: None of them belong in the dishwasher!

Basically, the care is not much different from that of a stainless steel kitchen knife. After use, simply rinse your 3Falken knife by hand under lukewarm water, using a drop of dish soap if necessary, depending on what was cut.

The crucial point is to dry it very thoroughly! You can use anything from a dish towel to a microfiber cloth; of course, the finer the cloth, the gentler it is on the material.

A dry knife is not a rusty knife!

Additionally, your 3Falken knife can be cared for with a drop of blade oil. Ultimately, it is up to you how much time you want to invest in maintenance. However, as with everything else: The better you take care of something, the longer it stays beautiful.

Shipping

The delivery time depends on whether you purchase a knife that is already in stock or have a custom one made.

Knives in stock are usually shipped immediately after receipt of payment (1-3 business days).

Custom-made knives have a highly variable delivery time, depending on the order situation and the level of customization. Currently, you can expect about 1–3 months. If the expected waiting time is longer, you will, of course, be informed before the final order is placed.

Your order will be shipped promptly after payment is received for items in stock.

For custom orders, unfortunately, you will have to wait for their completion. 🙂

1. Package not delivered – Return to sender

  • Undeliverable: If the package cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address, the shipping provider will usually return the package to the sender. This may take several days to weeks, depending on the provider and destination.
  • Failed delivery attempts: Often, the delivery person will attempt to deliver the package to the specified address. If delivery fails multiple times (e.g., because the address does not exist or is incorrect), the package will eventually be marked as “undeliverable” and returned.

2. Investigation and redirection (depending on the shipping provider)

  • Request an investigation: In some cases, an investigation can be initiated to determine if the package can be redirected if the error is identified (e.g., if the address is easy to correct). However, this is often only possible if the shipment has not yet been delivered.
  • Address correction: Some shipping providers allow you to change the address during the delivery attempt (e.g., via a redirection option). If the error is identified quickly, the package may possibly be redirected to the correct address.

3. Customer must reorder the package

  • No return or redirection possible: If the package can no longer be redirected or returned, the customer may be asked to place the order again. In this case, the customer is generally responsible for the error in entering the address.

4. Costs for return or redelivery

  • Costs: In many cases, the shipping provider will charge fees for returning or redirecting the package. As a seller, you may also incur additional shipping costs if the package needs to be resent due to a customer error. It is important to clarify in advance who is responsible for such errors and how they will be handled.
  • Responsibility: In the case of errors in entering the address, the customer is generally responsible, and you may not be obligated to provide a refund if the package cannot be delivered due to an input error.

Conclusion:

An error in entering the address can result in the package not being delivered and either being returned or marked as undeliverable. Generally, customers are responsible for the consequences of such an error, especially if the package needs to be returned or resent.

We deeply regret it if your order is lost during shipping. However, we want to assure you that we always strive to find a quick and satisfactory solution in such cases.

If your order is lost during shipping and this loss is confirmed by the shipping provider, you have two options:

  1. Refund of the order amount: If the package is lost, we will refund you the full order amount. This usually occurs after the shipping provider confirms the loss.

  2. Shipment of a new product: Alternatively, we offer to resend the ordered product, provided it is still available.

We understand that such situations can be unpleasant, and we promise to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. If this happens, please contact us directly so we can find the best solution together.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Warranty, Refund

Warranty for our hand-forged knives

We offer a warranty on our hand-forged knives, which covers technical or material defects. If a knife is impaired in its function due to material defects or processing problems, we will naturally take care of the repair or replacement of your knife.

It is important to note that damage caused by external influence, improper use or incorrect care is not covered by our warranty. This includes damage caused by improper storage, improper use of the knife or inadequate care.

Our warranty is a sign of our trust in the quality and durability of our knives, but proper handling and care are crucial to maximize their lifespan.

For knives in stock, a return or refund is generally uncomplicated.
However, it is important that the knife is in absolutely new condition! A knife that has already been used will not be taken back.

Even a single use is visible. In such cases, the knife will be returned to the customer without a refund.

Consultation with the customer is very important to us to realize their ideas as accurately as possible. So, don’t hesitate if you don’t really like the suggestions – good communication is immensely important for such a personal order.

However, if the final product really differs greatly from your expectations or there is a technical defect, there is, of course, with our consultation, the possibility of a refund or remake.
